Fjeldberg – Devotion for December 12, 2024
READ (Luke 2:1-5)
In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to their own town to register.
So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child.
REFLECT
Journeys. Think about all the journeys in the Christmas story in the Bible. Joseph and Mary going to Bethlehem is a familiar journey, but Zechariah also had a journey to go do service in the temple. Mary had a journey to visit Elizabeth. The Magi had a journey to worship the new king. God directed each of these journeys. Each of these people listened to God directing their journey, but I don’t think any of them imagined how their journey would fit into the larger picture of the Christmas story.
We can each spend time listening to God’s voice, directing our journeys. And we probably won’t know how our journey fits into a larger picture of working for the kingdom of God. What matters is that we listen in faith and take steps along our journey.
Every journey is different. For some it means working at the food pantry. For some it means spending time encouraging a lonely person. For some it means singing in a choir. How do you hear God directing your journey of life?
PRAY:
Gentle Shepherd, lead me and guide me along life’s way. Open my ears to hear your voice of guidance, and my eyes to see your direction. Amen.
