Fjeldberg – Devotions for April 17th, 2025
READ: (Exodus 12:14)
“This day shall be a day of remembrance for you. You shall celebrate it as a festival to the Lord; throughout your generations you shall observe it as a perpetual ordinance.”
REFLECT:
Today is Maundy Thursday, a day rooted in the ancient story of the Passover, when the Israelites were saved by the blood of the lamb. The Passover was a defining moment for the Israelites, marked by a meal, and celebrated through the generations. We see Jesus as the Lamb who saves, and the Last Supper as the beginning of a new covenant. Just like the original Passover, this holy meal is not a private event, it’s meant to be shared and celebrated through the generations.
I recently read an article called “In praise of unruly children in church.” I was reminded how the rituals of our faith aren’t sterile or perfectly performed; they’re learned and lived. This sacred learning and faith growth often happen in the noise, wiggles, whispers of children watching, mimicking, and sometimes distracting. What a beautiful picture, a community where the old teach the young not just by words, but by showing up again and again to the table of grace! Christ gives us his body and blood, out of love, out of a deep desire to make us whole and right with God. This table is for everyone (yes, everyone).
Jesus loves the rowdy kids. Jesus loves the tired parents and the patient (or not-so-patient) people sitting near them. Jesus loves you. Jesus loves me. Let’s share and show God’s love through the generations, just as the generations before us have done.
Pray:
Almighty God, thank you for sharing your love with us rowdy people who break the rules you have given us, and sending Jesus as the ultimate sign of grace to make us right with you. Bless us as we share your love with all we encounter, even when it is difficult. Bless our community these holy days as we prepare to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus! Amen.
