Fjeldberg – Devotion for April 3rd, 2025

READ (James 5:7)

“Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming.  See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains.”

REFLECT

Ah, the Iowa spring roller coaster – that magical time when your winter coat, shorts, umbrella, and sunscreen all get equal billing in the weekly forecast! One day we’re firing up the grill, and the next we’re scraping ice off the windshield… again. We Iowans must be the most optimistic people on earth, packing away our snow boots at the first chirp of a robin, only to wade through slush in our flip-flops a week later.

It’s almost as if Mother Nature is saying, “Not so fast, my friend!” And in that meteorological tug-of-war, James’s words ring especially true. Like farmers who understand that growing seasons follow their own divine timeline, we’re called to practice that same patient endurance. We can’t rush the harvest any more than we can rush spring in Iowa.

In our instant-everything world, waiting feels almost countercultural. But perhaps these weather whiplashes are gentle reminders that God’s plan unfolds in its perfect time – not on our impatient schedule. The discomfort of waiting might just be preparing us for something more beautiful than we could have planned ourselves.

PRAY:

Lord, thank you for this day, whether the weather be fair or poor, in knowing that we’re serving your glorious plan.  Please grant us the patience to not get discouraged, but to lift each other up.  Amen.
