READ (Colossians 3:12)

Therefore as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.”

REFLECT

Years ago, I was narrating a Christmas show for Lhea’s Barbershop chorus. The first act was reading “The Night Before Christmas” with music interspersed throughout the poem. Three young daughters of a chorus member were seated at my feet. After intermission the narration switched to reading the Christmas story from one of the Gospels.

The girls had not returned to the stage after intermission. The youngest girl was in the front row with her dad and I noticed she was getting upset. Storm clouds and imminent tears apparenton her face as she stared in my direction. Glancing down I realized she’d left her doll on stage.

When the chorus finished the song they were performing I laid the script aside and announced “Ladies and gentlemen please excuse the pause while I attend to some grandpa business”. At which point I picked up the doll, left the stage and returned it to the now smiling young lady.

Compassion, kindness and gentleness can take many forms depending on the needs of the moment. Compassion listening to someone needing an available ear. Kindness in providing a meal for a family in crisis. Many opportunities exist; even something as simple as returning a doll to a child experiencing what to her was a great crisis.

PRAY:

Lord we know there are many needs in the world around us. Grant us the empathy to see the need from their perspective and then respond as you would have us do in light of Col 3:12. In Jesus name, Amen.
