READ (Psalm 34:18)

“The Lord is near the broken hearted and saves the crushed spirit.”

REFLECT

Growing up in Huxley in the 40’s and 50’s was different than it is today.

Everyone knew everyone. When a “new family” moved into town, it didn’t take long for rumors to spread that the husband “drank” and was mean to his wife and children.

One day when I returned home from a friend’s house, Dad was home earlier than normal, and Mom had been crying. I asked Dad what was wrong. He told me that one of my uncles had died of a heart attack. He was a fun uncle, liked to tease, and loved to fish. My response was “Why him, why not, (the name of the man who was rumored to be so mean)”? My Dad responded, “I never want to hear you say anything like that again.” At my age, I didn’t understand why God would let a good man die and let a mean man live.

With age comes wisdom. Sometimes. There are times when I question why God allows “bad things” to happen. Loved ones dying as the result of a vehicle accident or so many dying as the result of another mass shooting. However, it wasn’t God’s doing. God wasn’t driving the vehicle that caused the accident. God wasn’t shooting the weapon that killed the victims. Human beings were responsible.

Faith in God doesn’t mean we will go through life without difficult times, but God is with us if we put our trust in Him.

PRAY: When we are dealing with doubts and grief, may we find hope and strength in knowing of your constant presence in our lives to comfort and sustain us. Amen.
