Fjeldberg – Devotion for August 8th, 2024
READ (Acts 2:19-21) And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
REFLECT I have never been much of a writer but today I told myself “Why don’t you just grab a bible and randomly pick a page and focus on the first few verses you see”. Wow, I did not expect these verses to be something to reflect on.
So right off the start in the first verse I see the word “signs”. How ironic, I guess. Here is my “sign” to step out of my comfort zone and write. Now what do all these verses mean? “Sun to darkness and moon to blood” to me sounds terrifying. I would assume if you were a believer back then this would cause you to pray. Which brings us to the last verse “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved”. Well, if you are praying it only makes sense that you would be “calling the name of the Lord” and be saved.
Growing up we moved a lot and never really went to church. My dad made us say the “Lord’s Prayer” before bed and that was pretty much our “church”. One day during my high school years I wanted to make some extra cash and I asked my dad if could go help on the farm where he worked. They were moving corn cobs from a crib that day and I was outside the exit with a pitchfork making sure the cobs kept flowing. It was to a point where the flow stopped, and someone needed to go in and knock the cobs loose. I immediately said “I’ll do it” even though I had no clue what I was doing. I hopped in with the pitchfork about 4 or 5 feet from the little opening were the cobs come out and proceeded to poke at the bottom of this huge pile of corn cobs…. not a good idea. The poking worked but I didn’t know I wasn’t supposed to be at the bottom of the pile and “BAM” here I am squeezed up against a wall buried in cobs well above me. Luckily, I was close enough to the opening that with my dad’s help was able to get out. It was scary for both my dad and me. I believe that “believing there is a Lord” is why I was saved and able to write this.
PRAY: Dear God, thank you for always being there to help us “believe in you”. In your name we pray. Amen
